The first Disney princess was introduced back in 1937 when Snow White hit theaters.

Since then, the animated characters have grown into a cultural force to be reckoned with and spawned analysis ranging from academic think-pieces to artists' reimaginings of the princesses as different races.

In recent years, Disney has done an admirable job of changing with the times.

The company introduced an Afircan-American princess with The Princess and the Frog, and a pair of princesses who were motivated by love of family rather than the search for a prince in Frozen.

Today, the iconic brand reaffirmed its commitment to cultural diversity by unveiling the first drawing of Elena of Avalor, Disney's first princess of Hispanic heritage:

Elena will make her small-screen debut on the Disney Junior show Sofia the First some time next year. She'll then star in her own spin-off series entitled Elena of Avalor. She'll be voiced by Domincan actress Aimee Carrero.

Yes, unfortunately, there are no plans for Elena to star in a full-length feature as the other princesses have, but we're sure Dinsey's many young Latina fans will appreciate that their heritage is being reflected nonetheless.

Next, maybe the company will consider the petition for a plus-sized Disney princess.
