Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is not just a talented director, but a good sport, as he says he was not offended by Sean Penn's "green card" joke at the Oscars.
In fact, he said he got a kick out of it.
Sean Penn was slammed earlier today for a joke he made at the Mexican director's expense, just before presenting him with the Oscar for best picture.
Penn opened the envelope, took a beat, then said, "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?"
Yup, an unfunny joke from an unfunny guy. Some people even found it racist and offensive. But Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu says he found it "very funny."
Inarritu directed Penn in 21 Grams, and the two have since become friends. He explained that jokes like the one Penn made are just the way the two of them get along:
"Sean and I had that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive."
He continued, "He was always making jokes … I made a lot of very tough jokes (to him) that I will not tell you."
Now, it probably doesn't hurt that Inarritu, the writer, director, and producer of Birdman, took home three Oscars at the 2015 Academy Awards.
Winning usually makes mediocre jokes about oneself go down a little easier.
Penn strikes me as one of those guys that always wants to be funny, but just isn't. Of course, he's great looking and incredibly talented, so funny guys are looking at him with jealousy too.
It's just the grass is always greener in someone else's lake.
The secret to a good joke, Sean, is always make sure you're funny before you tell it.
Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are off to the Oscars. Captioned Pratt on this Instagram photo: "It's raining in LA and we're on our way to the Oscars! Gonna be a #wetredcarpet!"
We adore Anna Kendrick. She poses here with Jack Black and wrote as a caption to the Instagram photo: ""We did it!!!! Now it's time for some brown liquor! #Oscars."
